Sharp Shadows & Sunlight
As a relative newcomer to street photography, as well as shooting solely in black and white, I’ve had to approach the way I take photographs on the street in a totally new way, or perhaps more aptly in a new light.
“Searching for the light” is a phrase I’ve read often in street photography articles and something I’ve tried to keep in mind when on the streets. I think that being conscientious of where light sources are, and where light meets shade, helps capture much more striking images.
Today I realised that the weather is a key factor in how light comes across in my photos, and in particular how clear skies and sunshine can produce clean and dynamic imagery. This morning for example it was clear skies and highs of 30 (almost too hot); with no clouds to block the sun I was able to capture distinct and crisp images like the one below.
When I’m out shooting now I’ve learnt to take a break at a interesting place where a light source meets a strong shadow. I did this today, stopping for five minutes, and managed to capture this photo of a man cast half in sunlight, and half in shadow.
This “event horizon” of sorts is something I seemed to notice more and more behind the camera and I think it really provides a great juxtaposition and contrast in my black and white photography.
