Sharp Shadows & Sunlight

As a relative newcomer to street photography, as well as shooting solely in black and white, I’ve had to approach the way I take photographs on the street in a totally new way, or perhaps more aptly in a new light.

“Searching for the light” is a phrase I’ve read often in street photography articles and something I’ve tried to keep in mind when on the streets. I think that being conscientious of where light sources are, and where light meets shade, helps capture much more striking images.

Today I realised that the weather is a key factor in how light comes across in my photos, and in particular how clear skies and sunshine can produce clean and dynamic imagery. This morning for example it was clear skies and highs of 30 (almost too hot); with no clouds to block the sun I was able to capture distinct and crisp images like the one below.

When I’m out shooting now I’ve learnt to take a break at a interesting place where a light source meets a strong shadow. I did this today, stopping for five minutes, and managed to capture this photo of a man cast half in sunlight, and half in shadow.

This “event horizon” of sorts is something I seemed to notice more and more behind the camera and I think it really provides a great juxtaposition and contrast in my black and white photography.

Impulse buy -Canonet QL19

Town markets are one of the weekly occurrences in France and on a recent trip to le Midi-Pyrénées I came across a small Toulouson market selling all sorts of things; cutlery, furniture, vintage signs, lamps, ash trays, etc. I love these types of markets -the smell of vintage leather, the colourful and the extraordinary. The stalls I enjoy the most, of course, are those selling vintage cameras and photography paraphernalia.

On this particular day I wasn’t disappointed and there were a couple of stalls displaying some of the best classical cameras of the last fifty years or so. I had no intention of buying, just browsing, touching, and handling as many lenses, flashguns, and camera bodies as I could without wasting the market seller’s time, but in the end I couldn’t resist the charm of an alluring Canonet QL19 labeled with a €20 sticker. The camera lense was a 45mm 1.9 [the 1.7 came with the QL17] and did appear to have a faulty shutter, but I was pretty certain that this was just a common sticky shutter problem inherent to the Canonet series, and would be a relatively easy fix. When I picked it up I knew that I wanted it and after a little haggling, in poor French, I managed to get it for €15 with the original leather Canon QL case thrown in for free.

I’ve been meaning to buy a rangefinder for a while so I can get back into shooting more street as well as film, that way I can abandon digital for a while and get back to the basics. Next job is to fix the shutter asap so I can break it in and see how it performs.

Following the success of last weekend’s trip to Arles, a group of us decided to travel to Salon-De-Provence; a small commune situated between Aix and Arles. In many respects -unsurprisingly- the area is very similar to Aix-En-Provence, with plenty of fountains and provencal charm. There wasn’t as much to do here, as in Arles, but the day was just as enjoyable and the weather just as pleasent. I managed to get a few photos of the Cimetière de Manières, the famous Fontaine Moussue as well as a few more in the Château de l’Emperi; check out the processed ones by clicking ‘Read More’ below.
